Cohen admitted violating election law by paying money to Daniels to keep her quiet during the campaign. The legal theory is that these were illegal campaign contributions. The fact that Cohen entered this guilty plea doesn’t mean he actually broke campaign finance laws. Election law expert Bradley Smith, among others, maintains that paying hush money to silence people with potentially damaging information on a political candidate does not constitute a campaign contribution. So whether Cohen violated the law is at best an open question. If he did, which is a big if, it would result in a fine. Cohen did this because Mueller threatened him with major jail time on the bank and tax fraud claims. It's once again political rather than legal. Just like the sham indictments of the Russian intelligence agents.
Cohen’s admission on the campaign contribution count has no legal force except as to Cohen. It is not binding on Trump. But that's not the point - it's now another narrative that the sheeple, like you, eat up.
