It was a stability move and to get out of a terrible conference. Those still hold valid today, being a member of the richest and most prestigious conference is simply a side benefit.

Big 8 ceased to exist in the mid-1990's. There is no great rivalry for MU with Baylor, Texas Tech, W. Virginia, TCU, etc. The Big 12 was a no point a good conference or an ideal membership.
