It gives them a hedge on on the enormous investment he is. The hedge is if he gets injured while playing these last few games, well they label him as injury prone and his draft stock tumbles, and they don't lose out on an enormous salary if he was to get injured after signing the contract.
If he doesn't get injured it makes the investment so much easier for an NBA team and makes drafting him two or three spots higher that much easier.
For the Porter family, if he plays and gets inured they lose millions (insurance is nothing compared to a high-end NBA contract).
If he plays and does well, he may move up in the draft and he'll make a few more million.
If he was my son, I would advice him not to play from a pure financial perspective. The risk is way to high.
