Some argue that Japan was willing to surrender

Haven't looked at this in a while, but there are indications that Japan was ready to surrender under fairly reasonable terms.
Supposedly, Russia entering the theater against Japan spooked Japan as they preferred to lose to the US rather than have Russia take territory from them.
Another fairly well documented reason for using the Nukes was to demonstrate to the Russians that were willing to do so. I.e. as a message to the Russians along cold war lines.
I assume you have heard these arguments, so no offense. Just pointing out the evidence can be interpreted many ways.
