in the fall of 1945 and the spring of 1946, history would have looked very different.

I'm not defending the actions of the USA during WW2 or Truman's decision to drop the A-Bombs. It is my opinion by mid 1945 Japan had lost much of its fighting capabilities and short of a full scale USA invasion (which was unlikely at that point) they posed little threat.
