The very nature of the word 'champion' means a team "who has defeated or surpassed all rivals in a competition." The competition comes from what goes on on the field, not in the minds of a committee or poll. Before the 4 team playoff, the word national champion could not truly be used, as there was no playoff except within conferences. Bowl games could never determine a real national champion. The 4 team playoff is a start but not truly a fair competition among the best teams in the country. For years, the best has been first determined by polls of the top 20 and now the top 25. All of these have been accepted as being the best in the country. Any fair playoff should include at least all of them in some kind of competition that ends in the national champion being the last one standing. Otherwise forget about using the word national champion.
