That the article gave direct quotes for much of what he said, but only paraphrased him when discussing the era of slavery. My guess is that he said greatness was in the 19th century, or something like that.
The article is a distortion and you believe it and repeat it. What he said was, inartful and politically not very astute. But it is not accurately reflected, probably anyway, in the article.
