Another night another turnstile at the point guard position. Harris started but quickly got pulled after a turnover. Terrence Phillips, coming off a strong 20-minute outing at Central Florida, was MU’s first player off the bench Tuesday but promptly lost his dribble near midcourt and got the ball stolen by 6-9 forward Logan McClane. He played just seven minutes. Geist had four assists and no turnovers in 16 minutes without attempting a shot, but Martin didn’t like his defense. Harris finished with four points and three assists but four turnovers. Robertson took some turns at the point, too, but kept the offense stalled with his five giveaways.
Martin was asked if he expects Harris to eventually seize the point guard role?
“I thought I was a good player coming out of high school and I watched a lot of games (at Purdue) those first 14 or 15 until I really understood or grasped what Coach (Gene Keady) was saying,” Martin said. “It’s not easy. It’s not easy at all. It’s a hard, hard thing.
“But with Blake, just like anyone else … Terrence has a right (to the job). Same question you asked (applies to) Terrence Phillips, Jordan Geist. They want it just like Blake. Whoever earns it they get it. It’s all the same for me. You have to work extremely hard. It takes time. Wisdom comes with time. You can’t just say, ‘I want wisdom.’ Sometimes you have to go through something in order to gain that.”
