Most crooks have a cover story and lie a lot. Investigators deal with these types of situations on a daily basis. They know they need evidence to confirm the truthfulness of the testimony the elicit via plea bargins. These types of investigations are not the typical railroad affairs you find with indigent defendants with hapless public defenders. The defendants are all well resourced and have capable attorneys.
But it is a lot easier to procure that evidence if you know what actually happened. When you have that information you know where to look for the confirming evidence.
But of course, we in the public don't know even 5% of the evidence that the prosecutors have at this stage. That is by design, to keep the perpetrators guessing.
I learned all this by watching Columbo, so take it for what its worth.
