The political parties had progressive and conservative factions (Bourbon Democrats & Rockefeller Republicans). Those factions over time switched parties as the Democrats & Republicans coalesced into Progressive vs Conservative.

The parties were much more mixed ideologically, but over many decades they fractured and reassembled into what we see today.
