One dept I worked for was always so short on shift staffing that on evenings you went from call to call to call. If you had time for self-initiated activity like traffic, that was a miracle.
And you had to write a report for every dispatched call for service. If you had a barking dog complaint and the complainant refused contact you drove to the area of the complaint and listened and would often hear nothing. You still wrote a report "I came, I saw, I left"
On a typical Friday or Saturday night, instead of getting off at 2300, you were stuck writing ullsh*t reports until generally 0200.
You hoped to hell you weren't unlucky enough to have someone call in sick on mids because then they might ask you to hold over 4 hours....which delayed your report writing until 0300.
And you remained on the street to write reports unless it was the end of shift. Writing on a clipboard on the steering wheel of a car is so much fun.
