1. point in safe direction
2. drop the magazine.
3. rack the slide 3-4 times.
4. inspect the magazine well and chamber visually and digitally.
5. let the slide go forward.
6. continue pointing in safe direction and pull the trigger.
as far as the dna on the screw, i tend to agree if it's on the head it's easily explained. if it's somehow inside the gun that is a problem. i assume they'd then argue cross contamination.
now....i don't know much about this case and i have no idea of the circumstances of how the gun was recovered. if there's an unruly crowd around or something and you don't have adequate crime scene protection then yes you might consider rendering the gun safe at that time, but if there's no exigent circumstances it should be left as is and where it is for the crime scene investigators and detectives etc.
