Conservative judges are constitutionally based, that is what makes them conservative. Progressive judges are socially based, that is what makes them progressive. Judges are required to base their ruling upon constitutional law which means that progressive judges are much more likely to stray than conservatives.

That is not to say conservatives never make bad rulings but their mistakes are more likely to be poor applications of the constitution. Progressives are more likely to simply ignore the constitution.
