I'd suggest the Roth 401k is an outstanding savings vehicle.

It is just not available with many employers. The tax free money after the compounding interest would more than make up for not reducing your upfront taxes during peak income years.
The wildcard is a gov't money grab as a result of some financial catastrophe. The govt eliminating new Roth plans going forward is a more realistic option.
