and facebook to plant those stories, particularly on facebook pages known to attract conservative or anti-hillary people. The fake twitter responses were used to create buzz about an article that would then be posted as a link in those facebook sites, fooling Facebook's algorithm into seeing it as a real issue. From there, it would take a life of its own as real humans would then see it as real and post links on their own facebook pages.

The Russians exploited this.
