irrational fear?

It is legitimate to fear a black man who is holding a gun to me. It is irrational if he is simply walking by me on the sidewalk. The first example is a fear the second a phobia.

Fear is very rational and natural. It is what stops from trying to pet the dog who has his hackles up and is growling at us. Phobias are psychotic fears that prevent us from living a normal healthy life. Avoiding all dogs would be an example.
