When you do a search on your own, a competent AD doesn't talk to one coach at a time. Instead, you talk to a half a dozen or more agents, gauging interest and asking what numbers the coach would require, etc. This is why the press had such praise for Josh Whitman's search.

JW talked to CM's agent as well as a dozen other agents.

And, after he had already agreed to take the job, CM, who must get top talent to win, floats the "turned down Illinois" rumor to bolster his rep in local recruiting.

Josh Whitman didn't even talk with CM personally. Underwood was the second coach he talked to.
