You can do all of the things without firing him, that you could do by firing him immediately. Think about it:
1) Can talk to other coaches and let them know that there will be an opening and that you're interested in them.....
2) Can informally tell the kids on the team what they already know - he's gone at the end of the year - play for the next coach or look for your next school;
3) Fan base is already reduced to friends and family program, so not like it's going to get worse. Fans will get excited when the new hire is announced if it's exciting. You probably harm it very little.
4) You allow Kim to go at season's end with grace. That may mean something to someone that you intend to hire.
5) You have time to start arranging booster money and identify what they want to see without it being all public and scrutinized.
So anyway, I don't think there's any way he's here next year, but that's the stuff I can think of for letting him continue this year. It would be an interim situation. You're not hiring someone who's going to come in with recruits ala Howland or Thuggy Bear. It's going to take some time. Which reminds me of another:
6) It allows you to get the NCAA situation resolved so the next coach knows what he's stepping into and you don't repeat this saga.
