The football boycott was a big deal because football is big money. If college football wasn't such a money maker, nobody would have cared and the players would have likely never used their privilege to make political protests. Those that don't agree with it can most easily make their voices heard by not donating any more money to it.

I know I was part of the problem in creating this college football monster. The only way I can be part of the solution is to take my money out of it. Most of my group has done the same.
