neighborhood. One thing that I never heard reported during their transition is Beamer's involvement in the process (it's one reason Bud Foster is still there as the DC). JF transferred from OU to Murray State as a player (he's originally from Tulsa [Union HS] & signed under Schnellenberger). He redshirted, Schnellenberger left & was replaced by the disaster that was John Blake. He began as the backup the next season, took over as the starter for half the season & was yanked again going back to the backup role. Had no confidence in Blake so he transferred to Murray State where he impressed everyone he came in contact with.
Beamer was at Murray St from the late 70s thru 86 & has continually stayed in contact with the leadership there (making recommendations for coaches, helping out where he can). He has known JF since his playing days & followed his career going forward as well as being one of his mentors. JF is the guy Beamer wanted to replace him. He feels he can win at VaTech--especially in the division they're in. Thrive there & set himself up to Stoops at OU if that job were to come open.
