the 4 teams. Despite our win yesterday, I think Florida is the better team overall. They have proved that over the course of the season. If the match yesterday had been in Gainsville I think we would have lost probably. But the gap between us and them is much less than I thought it was a month or two ago.
Look at the non conference. Florida lost to Nebraska 3-1, no disgrace there. Beat a top 25 Oregon team on their home court. Swept a top 25 Michigan State team on their home court. Beat a top 25 Florida State team on their home court. And we lost on our home court to Utah and Miami Ohio. Utah turned out to be a really good team. Still no excuse for not taking them down after being up 2-0 at home. And we were swept by BYU on a neutral court, though we played them tough.
Now take the SEC conference. Florida swept Alabama on the road. We barely beat the Tide 3-2. Florida swept SC easily on the road. We lost to them 3-1. Florida whipped TAMU on the road 3-1. We lost to them 3-1, without Crow, of course. But we excelled in the 3 team round robin with Florida and Kentucky, going 3-0. Florida went 0-2, including getting swept at home by UK.
Florida deserves its RPI and ranking. They are the gold standard in the SEC. But we are 4-4 against them since joining the conference. And we won the matches that mattered the most in the conference this year. So I put Florida ahead of us on their overall record, but just barely.
I was convinced UK was the best team in the conference when they swept Florida in Gainsville. And they proved that against every other team in the SEC. Except us. I honestly did not think we would win either match against UK. But we did.
TAMU comes in at #4, but they will be a tough out in the tournament. They have played a killer schedule, so pay no attention to their win loss record.
I really wish there was more depth in the SEC beyond the top 4 teams. Yes it would lead to tougher matches for Mizzou and more losses probably. But it would prepare us better for the grind of the NCAA tournament.
