Just like in softball and basketball, the selection committees use RPI to a significant extent when selecting and seeding teams, but in part that is because the RPI reflects some of the same metrics that the committee considers. But also, RPI aside, there is a human factor in the selection and seeding process, that you see reflected in the poll results week to week.

Even more reason for Mizzou to push its RPI ranking up as far as possible, and maintain and increase a ranking in the human poll. That's where the inexplicable loss to a mediocre South Carolina team on the road was so damaging to us.

Florida and TAMU destroyed SC in Columbia 3-0, and Kentucky beat them 3-1, although several sets were close. I still can't believe we lost to them 3-1. Just no excuse for that with a team that is good enough to sweep UK on the road and beat them at our place with a great player injured.

To put the loss to SC in proper perspective, consider this: until then, Florida, Mizzou, Kentucky, and TAMU were a combined 41-0 this season against the bottom 8 teams in the SEC. That's how much of a gap in talent there is.

Now it's 41-1.
