He was an ok defender last year with occasionally smart cuts into passing lanes to disrupt. With the typical sophomore jump, he might be a plus on the perimeter defensively (albeit always size limited).

Van Leer defensively is always going to have to get by on instinct and size.

Geist is a rookie at this level, even if a soph. He's going to struggle a bit adjusting to the game defensively.
