Great to see the Tiger’s play with some energy and enthusiasm. The opponent was absolutely atrocious, but for the most part the Tiger’s looked overwhelmingly good. 35.8% difference in FG% and FG% allowed.
Really impressed with the versatility and confidence of Hughes, hope that is the start of a great Tiger career. Interestingly, he is the only Tiger yesterday who took more than 6 shot attempts. He has a good bounce to him and a quick release.
Jackson also looked more athletic than we have seen for the Tiger’s in a while, kind of like an Earnest Ross without the outside shooting. I’m impressed with his desire to attack the rim and glass.
Best game I’ve seen Vanleer play, he looked very confident and in charge and did a good job of orchestrating things. I will be shocked if he doesn’t lead our team in minutes played this season by a huge margin. Will be interesting to see if he can be effective against higher caliber opposing athletes.
Was kind of disappointed in Geist’s defense, he isn’t any more the answer there than Phillips is. I think both will be adequate for what we need right now, but we won’t be able to beat really good teams without a better defensive option at pg.
Rebounding is a concern, given how many shots that team missed and their lack of effort and ability. The one aspect that they could find any success is that we don’t appear to be a very good defensive rebounding team.
I wasn’t there so I can’t comment fully knowledgably but the announced attendance of 3,977 seems impossible via TV viewing. There didn’t appear to be more than 2,000 people there at most.
While the opponent was just brutally horrible, didn’t appear to care or be coached, and gave terrible effort after they learned they couldn’t buy a basket…..we destroyed them and that is exactly what you are supposed to do to teams like that. I’m certainly encouraged, and for the first time in a long time I can say I’m actually looking forward to see how we stack up against Xavier and think it will serve as a good measuring stick game that we could potentially pull a surprising upset in. Weird things happen in these early season tourney’s. I think our frontline is going to potentially be a huge liability against better opponents but against very low caliber opposition like last night it certainly wasn’t.
