In private enterprise, in Missouri - an employ at will state, you can fire someone for any reason or no reason. However, in the public sector you cannot do this without cause. While football players are not technically "employed" by the University, to come in and just "clean'em out" the day after would result in all sorts of discrimination lawsuits and the like. Pursuing the course of action you describe would be like dumping gasoline on a fire. Not saying I disagree with the idea but it just can't happen that way without bigger problems resulting, especially in the immediate aftermath of the demonstrations, Click, Wolfe and Loftin.
