Football is related to what MakeShift said below. Local support used to be great, but basically a generation of kids growing up in central Missouri during the dark ages did a lot of damage.
Now you add in other complications, such as going to games is way more expensive, people are busier than ever, and the product on TV is so much better. People can watch the Mizzou game at home or at a local bar and still have plenty of time to watch other games, do stuff around the house, spend time with family, etc. So it's a fragile situation with bad product on the field plus some undesirable stuff off it. Just the way things are.
