Ran (and I use that term loosely) in the Biltmore Mansion Marathon 2 1/2 years ago on the grounds of the Biltmore Mansion. I'll admit, it was kind of cool to run right in front of the mansion at the 6 mile mark.
But it was a cold and rainy early March day. 41 F and steady rain throughout. At some points of the race, you were running in ankle deep water. And I had never run farther than 13.1 miles in my life.
Ran the first half in 2:10 and thought "This is a breeze - no problem". At the 22 mile mark, my legs gave out on me. I had to walk the final 4 miles and every step was no fun. I had people passing me over the last 4 miles where I thought "No Way that person should be passing me". But there was nothing I could do about it. Legs were killing me.
But there was also no way I wasn't finishing. So, first half - 2:10. Last half - 2:50. I walked across the finish line. But I finished.
One and done for me with marathons.
Like Clint Eastwood used to say in his Dirty Harry movies "A man's got to know his limitations".
I've stuck to half marathons ever since.
