What Trump ended up doing was becoming an independent who was able to take the Republican nomination while the other Republicans devoured each other. Trump was able to do to the Republican party what Bernie was prevented from doing to the Democrats by Debbie Wasserman Schultz.

When you look at the Republican party right now, I have a hard time envisioning who could unite that party.
