He said about 1/2 of the people he tried to hire would only work if they were paid in cash due to the welfare benefits they were receiving. In other words they couldn't afford to take a paying job where the pay was reportable by the company. They were happy to work if it was "off the books"

His secretary turned down a promotion to be a sales assistant for the same reason i.e she would have lost her rental subsidy on a $600,000 home she lived in.

He recently left the Bay Area and took a similar job in Dallas because he got sick of problems like that
