My parents got a window unit for the kitchen, breakfast nook, and den when I was about 12, but they didn't get central air until I left for Mizzou. Neither the grade school nor the high school I went to were air conditioned. None of them were back then. People went to a lot of movie matinees, just for the AC.

The attic fan was great. I remember that my Dad had to get up in the middle of the night to turn it off because it got so cold.

I currently live in a house with 12 foot ceilings. If you use the ceiling fans properly and open the windows at the top, you can manage the heat OK until blistering heat like this comes around. I spend more of my time on the first floor in the summer, and more time on the 3rd floor in the winter, like most of my neighbors.

Folks used to take drives out in the country and use the wind splits to maximize the breeze in the cars. I bought my first air conditioned car in 1973.
