And yet, you keep saying that is a just plain dumb statement.

Start dealing with reality. You can try those other things, but just like Coach K knows for a fact, even after trying all of these things you mentioned, sometimes you still can't get players to accept their roles. You are simply too dense to accept this reality of life.
