with gang leaders to stop crime. He'd meet them in Gracie Mansion or elsewhere to find common ground.

Not sure how that would work but the meetings would probably start with
man dummy asking how he could help the gang members straighten out their lives.
Because criminals don't want to be criminals but they turn to crime and drugs to help feed their families and take care of their kids. Because of institutional racism, lack of housing, poor education and provocations by the cops.
Stop me if you've heard this before.
He may even turn to midnight basketball in the inner cities.
