Federal immigration agents reportedly arrested a professional violinist on the same day of his wife's birthday.

John Shin, who has performed with ensembles including the Salt Lake Symphony, Utah Symphony, and Ballet West, was taken into custody while on a work trip on August 20, according to a report by ABC 4

Newsweek has contacted the family for via GoFundMe for comment via email.

Why It Matters
The arrest comes as President Donald Trump's administration is carrying out plans to remove millions of undocumented migrants as part of a hard-line mass deportation policy designed to crack down on migration.

What To Know
Shin's wife, Danae Snow, told ABC 4 that she received a brief phone call from him during the arrest.

"That morning he was texting me, 'Happy birthday, I love you so much' and then by that afternoon, I got the phone call, Honey, I've been detained by ICE, I love you and the kids and they're sending me to a detainment center," Snow told the outlet. "I just thought, 'Oh my gosh, I don't know how this can happen.'"

Shin was later transferred to a detention facility in Colorado, ABC 4 reported.

Shin's attorney, Adam Crayk, told ABC4 that the detainment stems from a 2020 impaired driving conviction. Shin completed probation and fulfilled all court requirements, but the sentence makes him a priority for immigration enforcement.

Shin moved to Utah from South Korea as a child, entering the United States on a K-2 visa with his father, and later obtained Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) status.

"ICE arrested Donggin Shin, a criminal illegal alien from South Korea, on August 18, 2025. His criminal history includes a DUI conviction," A senior Department of Homeland Security (DHS) official told Newsweek.

"Shin entered the U.S. on a tourist visa on September 3, 1998. This visa required him to depart the U.S. by March 3, 1999. Over 25 years later, he was still illegally in the U.S. President Trump and [DHS] Secretary [Kristi] Noem are committed to restoring integrity to the visa program and ensuring it is not abused to allow aliens a permanent one-way ticket to remain in the U.S.

In 2012, then-President Barack Obama introduced the DACA program, offering protections and work authorizations for millions of undocumented residents who came to the U.S. as minors. The program has been in legal and political limbo for years as courts have weighed its validity.

Shin married Snow, a U.S. citizen, and initiated the green card process three years ago. However, due to circumstances beyond their control, they were unable to file for the green card in a timely fashion.

"The problem that you have… is as someone who is coming to the United States and who doesn't currently have proper documentation because when you get a DUI, DACA gets taken—immigration will not let you have DACA with a DUI," Crayk said.

"He becomes a priority, especially under the current administration—so, he was taken into ICE custody because he accepted and did an agreement in Tooele County for an impaired driver, which caused ICE to take him into custody."

In response to the detainment, community members have organized daily violin performances at the Utah State Capitol to raise awareness and show support. A GoFundMe campaign has also been launched by the family to assist with legal fees.

What People Are Saying
John Shin's attorney, Adam Crayk, told ABC4: "It looks like John back in 2019 was charged with a DUI, but ultimately resolved his case in 2020 with an impaired driver [charge]. He has successfully completed all of his probation, completed treatment classes, everything he was ordered to do…everything was completed."

His wife, Danae Snow, wrote in a post on GoFundMe: "John's sudden detention has left us scared and overwhelmed. We rely on him every day, and his absence has created a void that is felt by everyone who knows him."

What Happens Next
A bond hearing for Shin is scheduled for next Tuesday, 2 September, where his legal team will argue for his release as his immigration case proceeds. Until then, his future in the U.S. remains uncertain.
