why is this an issue?

On face value, ability to bench press doesn't have anything to do with one's policy positions or operational competency for a mayor's job.
But it sticks out.
Physical competence, moreso than absolute strength, is evidence of exposure, repeated exposure, to physical difficulty and the associated mental toughness to endure that exposure.
There's something about it, especially when you see a male that is not only weak but clearly unexposed to physical difficulty: you wonder how strong he can be and what he can contribute to the "tribe" so to speak.
