They failed to steal his car and fled in another vehicle. He then chased them down in his car and shot at them while driving. When they abandoed the car to run away again.. he shot and killed one of them.
Car theft does not carry the death penalty. He could have followed them and reported their location to the cops on his cell phone. Instead, he must have thought he was Wyatt Earp chasing a horse thief and issuing a summary death penalty.
