The official reason listed was "schedule restructuring".

Reality was ratings were awful unless big names were still alive late.

No one is spending their Sunday watching Russell Henley vs. Andrew Novak and Sepp Straka vs. Harris English in the semis with the winners playing in the finals. Hell even throw in Morikawa/Matsuyama/Rose level guys and it's not going to move the meter much. Gotta have Scottie or Rory and no guarantee you're going to get that in match play.
