Kursk offensive, which grabbed bought and paid for headlines in the west, but turned out to be a disaster for Ukraine, losing troops needed to shore up defensive lines.

The Russians are deliberate and methodical, but very effective in war.

Once they realized Ukraine (the West) was not going to settle early, Russia settled on a war of attrition, slowly, but effectively, grinding down the Ukraine army.
