outing your buddy with almost zero consequences other than laughter.

In this case, even if joking, Mateer puts the spotlight on himself, doing something that could potentially cost him his entire career.

There are lots of ways to make jokes on Venmo. However, I certainly wouldn't put in the memo line anything that could jeopardize my career, even if it's not true.
