If the victims of this "started it" by saying something unkind, or did something that wasn't upfront to the criminals, that would be interesting to know. I don't, however, think that the victims personally assaulted or antagonized everyone in the mob that beat them into a coma. The reaction of the mob was inexcusable.
I don't think that whatever the victims did before the assault changes the fact that this was not a fight. This was a mob assault.
