During the pandemic, Trump signed into law massive economic stimulus bills that were similar to Democratic proposals in size and scope:

CARES Act (March 2020) – $2.2 trillion

Included direct payments to Americans ($1,200 checks)

Expanded unemployment benefits ($600/week boost)

PPP (Paycheck Protection Program) for small businesses

Bailouts for industries like airlines

Hospital funding

Large Federal Budgets (2017–2020)
Despite GOP rhetoric about reducing the deficit, Trump presided over rising deficits and spending even before the pandemic.

Military spending increased by hundreds of billions

Infrastructure and disaster relief spending grew

Farm bailouts during the U.S.–China trade war (over $28 billion between 2018–2020), largely going to red states

➡️ Many fiscal conservatives criticized these as “big-government” moves, while Democrats supported similar efforts for different reasons (supporting workers, green infrastructure, etc.)

Trump signed bipartisan budget deals with Democratic support that raised spending caps:

Bipartisan Budget Act of 2018 – Raised military and domestic spending

Bipartisan Budget Act of 2019 – Lifted the debt ceiling and boosted both defense and non-defense spending

➡️ These went against the Tea Party-era “austerity” mindset and were broadly welcomed by Democrats.

300 billion infrastructure program: funding roads, broadband, and bridges

“Golden Dome” missile defense system (~ $175 billion)

Defense spending raised to ~$1 trillion annually (13% increase), plus $43–$113 billion for Homeland Security

➡️ Some alignment with infrastructure investment—possibly “Democratic‑style”—but dominated by military focus.

Trump authorized record-breaking farm bailouts during his trade war with China:

Total bailout aid: ~$28 billion (2018–2020)

Distributed via USDA’s Market Facilitation Program (MFP)

Aimed to compensate farmers hurt by retaliatory tariffs on soybeans, pork, dairy, etc.
