BUT - it's not like as 100% clear cut no question obvious as some people act. I bet he gets in with like 80% vote or something.
Comparing him to other HOF catchers?
He's 12 WAR below the avg.
His peak war (7 year peak) is 6 below the avg.
His WAR/162 is 1.7 below.
JAWS metrics have him as the 22nd best catcher to ever play the game. I think there's 18 catchers in the Hall (including Negro Leagues players).
Thurman Munson, Gene Tenace, Bill Freehann, Wally Schang, and Jorge Posada are ahead of him by JAWS metrics, and they're not in the Hall. Jason Kendall is tied with him. Buster Posey is ahead, and will surely get in when he's eligible.
A lot of these metrics favor offense over defense pretty heavily, which is why Molina isn't as strong when it comes to metrics. While he was a good hitter, that's not what he was known for. Never lead the league in a single batting stat once in his career. BUT...10x All-Star, 9x Gold Glove, 4x Platinum Glove? That's rarified air. Only Pudge and Bench have more Gold Gloves at catcher.
He is a Hall of Famer. He will be one of the "worst" catches in the Hall of Fame, but that's a useless insult. Like being the slowest gold medalist ever.
