California Governor Gavin Newsom stirred controversy on Sunday by claiming a Republican "reconciliation bill" would increase electricity costs by 30%, potentially making it "one of the most destructive bills in U.S. history." His remarks, posted on X, focused on the bill's alleged limitations on green energy subsidies.

However, critics quickly pointed to California's already exorbitant utility bills, among the highest in the nation. Ratepayers in the state reportedly pay 140% more for electricity than those in other states, with prices projected to continue climbing.

“Electricity costs could go up by 30%,” Newsom said on X of the GOP bill. “This is one of the most destructive bills in U.S. history.”

This comes as California pursues aggressive zero-emissions targets, aiming for an 85% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2045.

California's push for renewable energy has led to the production of more solar and wind power than the grid can consistently utilize, necessitating significant battery storage investments and even payments to neighboring states to accept excess electricity. Energy policy experts have warned that a heavy reliance on intermittent wind and solar can weaken grid stability.

President Trump has criticized "green tax credits" in reconciliation packages, advocating for the removal of all wind subsidies. The GOP-controlled Senate recently moved to accelerate the deadline for wind and solar projects in an amendment to its phase-out plan, a move criticized by some.

California's energy challenges are further compounded by the closure of several power plants and refineries due to restrictive regulations.

To bolster grid reliability and avert potential blackouts, state officials in 2024 agreed to extend the operation of three natural gas power plants through 2026. The state has a history of grid issues, with Newsom previously urging Californians to conserve electricity during peak hours.

Adding to the cost burden for Californians are some of the nation's highest gasoline prices, with further increases expected this week due to amendments to the state's gasoline tax and its low-carbon fuel standard and cap-and-trade programs, which have also been linked to elevated energy costs.
