They only meet every other year, which means they meet once every election cycle, starting in January and ending in June. I don't recall a special session called for anything of this magnitude. Abbott, who frustrates conservatives for lacking fortitude and is often seen as a follower to more outspoken conservative governors like DeSantis, is actually standing up for conservatives a bit. This needs to happen due to another frustrating problem with Texas politics. The GOP dominates the House chamber, but for a long time now, a relatively small number of GOP moderates have made deals with the Democrat minority to land the Speaker position. That means our committee chairs are dominated by moderates, with Democrat committee chairs, while the largest ideological group in the House, conservative Republicans, are left with minor chair positions. This is why the Texas legislature is not the conservative bastion outsiders believe it to be. Lastly, this small moderate candre is well-funded and well organized. They get ****loads of money from gambling and casino lobbies, as well as trial lawyers, and their organization support comes from the old Bush machine. Think about this next year when Cornyn (Bush machine) is challenged by Paxton (conservative GOP wing) for the US Senate.
