dealing with enslaved AAs in Texas. It has nothing to do with the majority of 19th century enslaved AAs. Many were freed when the Union Army passed through an area. Those in Missouri began to be freed in 1862 when Gen. Freemont took command of Western forces in Missouri. However, Pres. Lincoln put a stop to Freemont's actions as soon as slave owning Missouri Unionists complained. The primary reason it was made a holiday was to replace July 4th as national independence day.
