There seem to be a couple things at play.

First, with how they are set up, the have to get donations versus advertisers, which is kinda dumb.

But who will not take "free money" if they can get it.

In my opinion, this has shown two things. The incredible waste of money by government through so many means that is basically unchecked. and, the over-reliance of various groups on public money instead of broadening their support based. This is either because no one will donate to their cause, or they just got lazy and found easy ways to get money.

And this is pervasive through government. Even though everyone goes to DC to cut things, they become addicted to what they can do with that money. I think Elon became a big addicted in the power of the control of the money more than anything because he could use it to pursue various agendas...although I agree with him that government has basically done nothing even with what he has handed them.
