Abortion Pills Could Be Polluting Drinking Water

The Gov't. knew about this at least as far back as the 90s. That's when I learned of this issue at a regional staff meeting. Naturalists had observed frogs and a few other amphibians in Louisiana that had developed both male and female sexual organs. At about the same time the herbicide Atrazine had been detected in a significant number of public water supplies in the Midwest and was under attack from environmentalists. The greenies initially blamed Atrazine and other similar materials that were suspected endocrine disruptors as the culprit affecting the amphibians. EPA commissioned a massive study of American lakes and rivers to identify man-made chemical contaminants. Agricultural pesticides were the focus. Given the significance of its watershed, the Mississippi River was heavily sampled. Laboratory analysis of raw water samples revealed hits on many of the suspect pesticides, including Atrazine. However, the herbicide Prometon was the most commonly found pesticide in the Mississippi water samples. Prometon is not an agricultural herbicide. Its typically used in total vegetative control or bare ground treatments in cities. Its used on parking lots, sidewalks, commercial and industrial sites, etc. The most commonly found man-made chemicals discovered were birth control and its metabolites. All of the chemical contaminants were found at parts per billion dilution levels well below what was considered a threat to human health. However, the hormonal substances in women's birth control pills were determined by EPA to be the most likely cause of amphibian hermaphroditism.
