I disagree in your analysis of Putin and Russia not being a enemy. Their religious and Ethnic makeup means little in that regard.
Russia appears to have no interest in elevating their selves to the Western standard and they put a lot of effort into sowing chaos in the west to keep the divide as small as possible.
Now with that said I don't see any reason we should be in a Proxy War with Russia either as that course of action was and is a boondoggle with no end or upside long term.
