It’s been proven with rats and non-human primates and correlation has been shown in humans, but direct studies in humans are blocked due to ethics concerns. Natural disasters have been used to show stressful events can result in epigenetic changes altering gene expression in humans that results in much higher rates of autism, mental illness and obesity in future offspring.
There have been studies done with animals where epigenetic changes were induced, they watched the gene expression change, behaviors get passed down to the next generation and reversed it through medication altering the DNA methylation.
