intelligence.

He could tell Americans the truth about why he has targeted China for blocking tech exports and wanting to ban TikTok. But it isn’t just Trump that is engaged in this.

When we receive a good from China, they have to spend resources producing those goods. We exchange it for US dollars. We get a good. The dollar being the reserve currency, it get sent back to the US in forms of investment, real estate, purchase of a financial product in a US market like NASDAQ or the NYSE.

TikTok is something else though. It is a platform used by millions of Americans. That platform is full of content created by Americans, some who get some money for creating content. But what content that gets promoted is determine by algorithms controlled by a Chinese business. Advertisers wanting to reach the large audience and those who want to sell products on TikTok have to pay this Chinese business for access to the market. This power allows them to influence the choices people… Americans make.

TikTok is able to extract a form of rent from American businesses without having to produce any goods. It breaks the trade relations we are used to.. exchanging goods for dollars. Much of the labor that goes into TikTok is unpaid labor. Just people making content that draws others to watch the videos. Those who are paid are selected by algorithms.

American businesses also extract rent. Apple does this with its App Store as does Google with the Play Store. The large user base forces app developers to pay Apple and Google 30% of each sale just to access the platforms. Apple and Google do not have to pay these developers. It is labor to promote their platforms that they get not only for free, but extract rent from.

This is feudalism.

And it’s everywhere. Amazon does the same with goods it sells. Each seller pays Amazon a portion of the sale as rent to access Amazon’s market reach.

Capitalism is dying. More and more businesses are having to pay rent to these tech bro companies to have access to consumers.

Where China comes in is they are a threat to American dominance of this. TikTok is the leading test case. The battle with China isn’t over manufacturing. It’s over whose tech bros will be able to extract rent. The US needs to maintain dominance over this to keep money flowing back to the US through investments. Manufacturing is irrelevant.

What we are seeing is actually a battle over which fiefdoms control the future. Chinese fiefdoms are actually more advanced and consolidated. They have apps that allow users to communicate, stream entertainment videos, do banking and make purchases all within the same platform, something American tech bros have not yet achieved.

It doesn’t seem clear how Trump thinks tariffs are going to help the US’ tech bro feudal lords maintain dominance.
