Some pretty varied takes on the Cantwell situation with some comments about who they are or how their fans act.
No, I am not a fan. Yes, I have/do root for them in certain situations against certain opponents.
The facts of the matter are:
Historically, Miami was a pretty well regarded academic institution that was generally popular among more well to do east coast whites.
Historically, they were not good in sports and their alumni base did not care that much about sports. It did not define them or their university.
But as sports began to take off in the 70's, they decided it would be good for their profile to be more competitive.
Howard Schnellenberger took advantage of Florida's booming population and....."demographics" to build the program.
They got good.
A notable portion of the school and the alumni base still match the old demographics and don't care that much about athletics, but a good percentage of the area loves sports and latched on to the Hurricanes as their team.
Not really that dissimilar to Georgetown in the 80's.
There are a handful of schools where their fans and their alumni are pretty different.
I feel like this is the Scottsdale post for the day, but some of you clearly needed it explained.
